Welcome
Parents & Other Survivors
of Murdered Victims to
Long Island New York
Metro Area Outreach
Our
primary goal is to reach out
to the survivors of a victim of a
homicide. POMV'S objective is to provide understanding,
comfort and support in the face of tragedy, to assist survivors to
reconnect with their families and their communities with the strength
necessary to survive the murder of a loved one. Since 1981 many of our
families have met once a month in an effort to reach out and allow a
survivor to express themselves, and to experience being part of a unique
community. We provide a network of those who know what survivors are living
through. We continually provide
information on what to expect from the justice system ie: what to expect at
trials and how in the future to circumvent parole release. POMV produces and circulates its own
quarterly newsletter and holds an annual vigil/dinner during National Crime
Victims Week (usually held in April). We draw together in December to share
in a non-denominational holiday meeting. As survivors
and advocates we present at conferences, seminars, media events. We help to
educate school personnel and employers. We share the hardship survivors of
murdered victims go through each and every day. This enables the helping
fields (public and or private) the tools to help survivors of murdered
victims to reorganize or regroup in the face of such a tragic event. To
begin life anew. We provide crisis intervention with certified
volunteers.
We are available 24 hours a day for telephone contact
Outreach for the Secondary Victim
POMV receives approximately 20 phone calls a day.
We serve 5% of our membership every 5 days. We share in
approximately 200 – 300 members at a Vigil/dinner each year. POMV Provides service
to 75% to 100% of our members every year by participating in: • training
for new DA's in New York State, provide sensitivity training as they come in
contact with our members and our future New York members • we also
participate in the New York State Police Cadets training's. • attend
at least three to four murder trials each year in New York State.
• monthly
meetings serve approximately 20 –30 members on an average. Whether it be at our
homes, on our own phones, computers and faxes or at our regular jobs
utilizing our work time to serve survivors.
We want to
leave no survivor
of a homicide victim behind. We are an
